Mallorca cathedral choirmaster wins national choir prize
Joan Company Florit, choirmaster at Mallorca Cathedral in Palma, has won the National Choir Music Prize. He will receive the award in Cocentaina, Alicante, on 7 November. The cathedral announced the decision on Thursday.
The prize recognises each year the career of a person or organisation in choral music. Its jury unanimously chose Company after considering nominations from choir federations, groups and people linked to the field.
Born in Sant Joan in 1954, Company has led the cathedral’s chapel since 2022. The jury praised him as a musician, musicologist and choir director.
He studied Philosophy and Literature at the University of Barcelona. While a student, he founded Coral de Sant Joan in 1975 and also founded Coral Universitat de les Illes Balears, directing it until 2023. He led the Choir of the Galician Symphony Orchestra for 25 years and now directs Cor Festival Cap Rocat de Mallorca.
The cultural association behind the prize brings together choral events in Ejea de los Caballeros, San Vicente de la Barquera, Burgos, Granada and Cocentaina.
