Mallorca church doorway repaired after stone sinks
Mallorca's Church of the Immaculate Conception in Establiments has its main doorway repaired after a stone at its centre visibly sank. A Mass on Sunday, 18 October, marks the end of the work, which cost just over 20,000 euros. Mallorca Island Council president Llorenç Galmés and vice-president for culture and heritage Antònia Roca attended the service.
The island council says the damage had developed gradually. As the central stone dropped, it affected how the doorway's weight passed to the supports on either side. The Bishopric of Mallorca asked architect Víctor Bauzá Piña to plan and direct the repairs.
Workers carefully removed the stonework and moulding above the entrance, lifted the central stone and set it back in place. They renewed the joints with lime mortar and rebuilt the upper stonework using the original materials and pattern, without changing the doorway's shape.
A grant from the Mallorca Island Council to the Bishopric of Mallorca paid for the restoration. The project was approved in March 2025.
