Mallorca Diada: symphony concert closes programme

Mallorca’s Diada programme ended on Friday with a Balearic Symphony Orchestra concert at the Teatro Principal in Palma, Mallorca. Vicente Balaguer conducted the performance, which linked composers and works to the island and the Mediterranean.

The concert opened with Symphony No. 2 in E-flat major by the Mallorcan composer Miquel Marquès. It then moved to the first movement of Meredith Willson’s Symphony No. 2 in E minor, The Missions of California, inspired by Junípero Serra, the Franciscan friar born in Petra.

Vicente Asencio’s Four Dances and an Alborada followed, before Suite No. 2 from Manuel de Falla’s The Three-Cornered Hat brought the concert to a close. The performance marked the 150th anniversary of Falla’s birth.

Llorenç Galmés, president of the Council of Mallorca, said culture holds a central place in the Diada. The concert closed several days of institutional events, cultural activities, family proposals and public-participation initiatives across the island.
