Mallorca’s Es Baluard opens a dictionary of power
Mallorca’s Es Baluard Museu in Palma opens a new exhibition on Tuesday, 3 November, where visitors can add their own ideas to a dictionary of power. Every contribution changes the shared work. It is part of an exhibition by artist Luis Camnitzer about the links between language, education and power.
A dictionary visitors can change
In the interactive piece La sopa del poder, visitors can add concepts and reflections to an open-ended dictionary. Camnitzer’s exhibition, El diccionario del poder, la resurrección de Simón Rodríguez, draws on the work of Rodríguez, a philosopher and educator who taught Simón Bolívar. Rodríguez saw education as a way to help create free citizens and new societies.
The exhibition places Rodríguez’s short sayings alongside contemporary tools, including artificial intelligence. Together, they raise questions about who decides what counts as knowledge.
From the gallery to the classroom
The museum also plans a project for secondary school pupils. They will devise a ‘recipe’ for concepts such as freedom, work and democracy, exploring what those words mean to them. Their contributions will be published in a collective recipe book.
Curator Mariana Silva says the exhibition questions how people establish what they accept as truth. Museum director David Barro says words shape how people understand reality. The exhibition runs in Space B until 17 January.
