Mallorca film festival honours Conclave director Berger
Mallorca’s Evolution Mallorca International Film Festival honours ‘Conclave’ director Edward Berger on Saturday: it will present him with the Evolution Vision Award 2026 after a screening of ‘Fatherland’ in Palma, Mallorca, this afternoon. Earlier, at the Hotel Portixol in Palma, Berger spoke about films that struggle to reach cinemas. The festival is recognising his career and contribution to international cinema.
“Film festivals are the museums of cinema,” Berger said. Films from smaller countries or made in less widely spoken languages can miss out on a cinema release, he argued, whatever their quality. Festivals give them a chance to find an audience. He pointed to ‘Fatherland’, a black-and-white film he produced, as one that benefits from that chance.
Berger also recalled coming to Mallorca after finishing ‘Jack’. He had needed a break from work and found calm while walking in the Serra de Tramuntana. He later returned for another walk with his son, and said he could come back to make a film if he found the right story.
‘Fatherland’, directed by Pawel Pawlikowski, will screen at Cine Rívoli before Berger receives his award. Festival director Sandra Lipski will then lead a discussion.
