Mallorca symphony opens with Elgar and Strauss
Mallorca’s Balearic Symphony Orchestra opens its subscription season at the Auditòrium de Palma in Palma, Mallorca, on Thursday 8 October 2026. Cellist Kian Soltani plays Edward Elgar’s Cello Concerto in the first half. Richard Strauss’s Also sprach Zarathustra follows.
Elgar composed the concerto in 1919. The Balearic Islands’ Department of Tourism, Culture and Sport describes it as intimate, expressive and deeply lyrical.
Strauss’s symphonic poem draws on Friedrich Nietzsche’s work of the same name and was first performed in 1896. Its well-known opening, ‘Alba’, is part of the programme that closes the concert. More performers and conductors are due at the Auditòrium de Palma in the coming months.
