Mallorca literary prize returns home with €50,000
Mallorca hosts a €50,000 literary prize on Sunday, 1 November: Portuguese writer Gonçalo M. Tavares receives the Formentor award at Cape Formentor, where the prize began. The ceremony starts at 20.00 at the Four Seasons Resort Mallorca at Formentor. Literary talks run there from 1 to 3 November, according to the Formentor Foundation, which organises both events.
Tavares wins the prize for his body of work. His books have been translated into more than 50 languages and published in around 70 countries.
Back where the prize began
The award grew out of meetings between writers and publishers at Cape Formentor. Those early gatherings took place between 1959 and 1962, and the prize was first awarded in 1961. After several years away from Mallorca, with stops including Seville, Gran Canaria and Madrid, both the award and the talks return to the island.
What happens next
The talks begin at 16.00 on Sunday with European publishers discussing reading comprehension and the future of written culture. Monday’s programme includes the history of the prize and a book about its past winners. A discussion of Tavares’s work follows on Tuesday, with conclusions from the talks due on Wednesday, 4 November.
