Mallorca’s free organ concerts go off-script in Alaró

Three free organ concerts begin in Alaró, Mallorca, on Saturday, 17 October, with the musicians making up the pieces as they play. Sietze de Vries from the Netherlands opens the series at Sant Bartomeu church at 11.30am. The concerts are part of the second Mallorca International Organ Improvisation Cycle (Cidiom), Alaró Town Council says.

There is no prepared score. While most organ festivals and concerts on Mallorca focus on written works, this series gives the performers room to create music live. Mayor Llorenç Perelló says the programme has grown since its first edition.

Markus Schwenkreis from Switzerland plays on 21 November. Colin Heller from France closes the series on 19 December; he can sing and play the organ and violin at the same time. Both concerts start at 11.30am at Sant Bartomeu church, where the Grenzing/Bosch organ takes centre stage.
