Mallorca opens 21 churches and other places of worship on Friday night, from 20.00 to 23.00. The fifth Nit de les Esglésies, or Night of the Churches, begins at 20.00 at Sant Felip Neri church in Palma, Mallorca. The Fundació Amics del Patrimoni and the Bishopric of Mallorca are organising the event.

In Palma, the Basilica of Sant Francesc and the church of Mare de Déu del Socors also open. Churches and other religious buildings elsewhere on the island include sites in Binissalem, Pollença, Santanyí, Sineu and Sóller. Two buildings take part in each of Pollença and Sineu.

People can go inside and stay as long as they wish, whether they are religious or not. The organisers say the evening offers a chance to take in the buildings’ architecture and symbolism in quiet contemplation.
