Mallorca’s Gàbia chosen for Prague Quadrennial
A live cellist, Bach’s six solo cello suites and a large cube that never stays the same are heading from Inca, Mallorca, to Prague in June 2027. Teatro Principal de Inca’s Gàbia has been selected for the PQ Performance Space programme at the Prague Quadrennial of Performance Design and Space, running from 8 to 17 June.
The project won its place through the event’s international open call. It will be presented in an exclusive format exploring the links between music, space, image, performer and audience.
The Prague Quadrennial is held every four years and is an international meeting point for scenography — the design of stages and performance spaces.
Miquel Àngel Aguiló will play Bach’s six suites live as the cube around him shifts into a changing space. Artists from music, dance, circus, graffiti and visual arts can join the work, with each new contribution altering its relationship with the music, the structure, the images and the audience.
Gàbia began as a stage-research project supported by the Instituto Nacional de las Artes Escénicas y de la Música. Teatro Principal de Inca says it was not created as a fixed show, but as a “modular and adaptable structure”.
The theatre is now shaping its Prague exhibition. Plans under consideration include a model of the structure, large-scale photographs, audiovisual projections, sound and spatial elements, aiming to let visitors see and understand Gàbia while experiencing something of the work’s spatial and perceptual character.
