Gaudí in Palma: exhibition looks beyond the cathedral

On Mallorca, only Antoni Gaudí’s work at La Seu cathedral is officially documented as his. A new exhibition at Can Bordils in Palma, Mallorca, looks at the mark he may have left elsewhere in the city. Palma City Council announced La Palma de Gaudí on Tuesday, 27 October, and says it runs until February.

Gaudí visited Mallorca regularly, especially between 1902 and 1904, when he worked on the cathedral at the request of Bishop Pere Joan Campins. The exhibition also points to possible traces of his ideas in other Palma buildings: Casa Balet, also known as Villa Alegre, from 1903; Sanitario Balear from 1908; and the Gran Hotel, attributed to Lluís Domènech i Montaner.

His visits were not all about work. Gaudí explored the island’s landscapes, took part in its cultural life and spoke with Miquel Costa i Llobera and Antoni Maria Alcover. The show is part of Any Gaudí, which marks the centenary of his death in Barcelona on 10 June 1926.
