Mallorca: 8m mural takes over Palma museum facade

An eight-metre mural now fills the main facade of the Museo Krekovic in Palma, Mallorca. Barcelona-born artist Oriol Angrill Jordà won the first KrekoArt Prize with Memoria de marés, the work now on display. The Consell de Mallorca announced the installation on Monday.

Kristian Krekovic’s face stretches across the wall, which is ten metres wide. Angrill Jordà has painted the artist as a monumental bas-relief — a shallow sculpture — made to look as though it has been carved into marés, Mallorca’s characteristic building stone.

The sculpture is an illusion. Exterior paint, applied with brushes and rollers, gives the flat wall a three-dimensional look.

Behind the portrait, a geometric border brings together patterns from Peruvian textiles and Mallorca’s traditional tela de llengües fabric. An inscription completes the piece with Krekovic’s belief that “art must serve to bring peoples and cultures closer together”.

Angrill Jordà, born in Barcelona in 1986, lives in Mallorca. He studied illustration at the Escola Superior de Disseny de les Illes Balears and printmaking at Central Saint Martins and The Art Academy in London. His work has also been shown in New York, Brussels and Strasbourg, as well as at venues including the Museu de Sóller and Palma’s La Misericòrdia Cultural Centre.
