On Mallorca, in Spain’s Balearic Islands, 44 film and script projects take the spotlight: filmmakers present their work at the Evolution Mallorca International Film Festival on Friday, 30 October. Directors, producers and film crews gather for a press conference, the festival says. That evening, the Associació de Cineastes de Balears (ACIB) marks its 20th anniversary at the Meliá South Beach hotel in Magaluf, Calvià.

From short films to scripts

The festival’s ‘Made in Baleares’ selection includes 18 fiction shorts, five documentary shorts, two student works, six feature films and 13 screenplay projects. Festival founder Sandra Lipski says she is particularly pleased to see a new generation of island filmmakers coming through.

Director Laura Casasnovas points to the first block of six short films: women directed every one of them. Another selected short, Valèria Cuní’s ‘Cementeri d’Estiu’, is set in Campanet, Mallorca. It looks at the arrival of tourism in the 1960s from a female perspective.

The anniversary gathering will look back on ACIB’s 20 years of work for Balearic cinema. Two discussions will cover how the islands’ film industry has developed and the opportunities to shoot there. An anniversary video and the ACIB Award 2026 are also on the programme.

The festival runs from 28 October to 4 November 2026, with more than 140 films and documentaries in its wider programme.
