MallorcArt Palma: 21 makers sell direct to public

Twenty-one accredited craft makers are selling their work at MallorcArt in the gardens of La Misericòrdia Cultural Centre in Palma. The three-day fair opened on Friday 11 September as part of the Diada de Mallorca and runs until Sunday. Its organisers, the Consell de Mallorca, say only accredited makers can take part.

The stalls bring together traditional trades and newer forms of craft. They include herbal work, ceramics, beekeeping, screen printing, painting, jewellery, bookbinding, sewing, drawing, llatra weaving, leather goods, cured meats, sauces and pepes manufacture.

Crafts, materials and the people behind them

MallorcArt is designed to let makers sell straight to the public. Visitors can also find out about the materials, working methods and stories behind the pieces on display.

Llorenç Galmés, president of the Consell de Mallorca, said the fair gives greater visibility to a sector that forms part of Mallorca's identity. Vice-president and Culture and Heritage councillor Antònia Roca highlighted the range of trades represented.

Workshops and music through Sunday

The programme also includes craft workshops, children's activities, music and popular culture. On Saturday 12 September, the craft workshop starts at 11.30, children's activities begin at 12.30 and a duo with an instrument performs at 19.30.

On Sunday, the fair reopens at 10.00, followed by a workshop at 10.30, children's activities at 11.30 and a xaranga concert at 12.30. MallorcArt is open on Friday from 16.30 to 20.30, on Saturday from 10.00 to 20.30 and on Sunday from 10.00 to 14.00.
