Palma attacks €10,000 cut to Miró Foundation grant

In Palma, Mallorca, the Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró is set to receive €50,000 from Spain’s Ministry of Culture — €10,000 less than in 2025. Palma City Council accused the ministry of slighting the foundation on 17 September after the cut was set out in a decree awarding grants to arts organisations. Culture councillor Javier Bonet said a March request from Mayor Jaime Martínez for increased funding had received no answer.

The council says the ministry’s contribution is lower than that of every other public authority backing the foundation. Palma has raised its 2026 allocation to €1.5 million after adding €50,000 to the original sum. The Consell de Mallorca provides €100,000 and the Balearic Government €80,000.

Bonet also argued that the ministry has awarded substantially larger sums to other cultural bodies and projects, despite many having a narrower role than the Miró Foundation.

Separate from the foundation’s running grant, its Son Boter workshop is being renovated. The €833,000 project is financed through the Sustainable Tourism Tax.
