Mallorca’s 1447 sea chart leaves display on 13 September

Mallorca’s 1447 sea chart can be seen at close range at the Museo de Mallorca in Palma only until 13 September. From then, the piece will be set aside for several months to protect its condition.

The signed and illuminated chart by Mallorcan cartographer Pere Rossell is a medieval sea chart, known as a portolan chart. Made in 1447, it is regarded as the oldest of Rossell’s ten known navigation charts and among the most valuable works of the Mallorcan School of Cartography.

The Museo de Mallorca opens from 09.00 to 14.00 on Tuesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, and from 09.00 to 19.00 on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

The Council of Mallorca bought the chart at Sotheby’s in London this year for it to become part of the island’s public heritage.
