Ibiza’s Puig des Molins gets protected new access

A new walkway is planned for the Puig des Molins necropolis in Eivissa, Ibiza, with special construction methods intended to protect the UNESCO World Heritage site. On Friday, 18 September, the Balearic Islands Government approved technical changes to the scheme. The overall budget remains 2.37 million.

The revised design calls for specialist materials and building techniques because the necropolis is both a protected cultural asset and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Those requirements have led to a recalculation of the tender costs for the works, but not to extra spending on the project as a whole.

The General Directorate for Culture coordinates the project, funded through the 2023 extraordinary annual plan of the Sustainable Tourism Tax (ITS). It also includes the cultural route, “Balearic Islands: Phoenicians, Punics and Talayotic Culture”, and an international congress on Ramon Llull.

Organisers will add public outreach activities to the congress, aiming to take Llull’s life and legacy beyond academic circles to a wider and more diverse audience. The Government says this will strengthen its cultural and tourism impact.
