Floats, music and a long history

The Council of Mallorca says more than 30 groups will take part, with representatives from 18 municipalities confirmed. Bands, folk groups, giant figures and decorated carts will join the procession. Emma Martínez González takes this year’s role of the ‘beateta’, and Palma’s municipal band will bring the parade to a close.

Palma’s triumphal float is the oldest on Mallorca. The procession began with celebrations in 1792 for the beatification of Santa Catalina Tomàs, a nun from Valldemossa. This year, the parade has been declared part of Mallorca’s intangible cultural heritage.

The route and Friday’s events

Emma Martínez González will be presented at Santa Magdalena church at 19.00 on Friday, 16 October. A session about Santa Catalina Tomàs for children follows at 19.30. On Saturday, a procession around Santa Magdalena monastery begins at 10.00, with a service an hour later.

The evening parade will pass along the Rambla, Calle de la Riera and Vía Roma before reaching Plaza de Santa Magdalena. A flower offering will follow at the end of the route.
