Mallorca screens Jamie Lee Curtis thriller 'Sender'
Mallorca gets a thriller about parcels nobody ordered: Sender, starring and produced by Jamie Lee Curtis, screens at CineCiutat in Palma, Mallorca, on Tuesday. Director Russell Goldman presented his first feature film at Hotel Portixol on Monday during the Evolution Mallorca International Film Festival. It is competing with other debut features at the festival’s 15th edition.
Britt Lower plays Julia, who is trying to rebuild her life after alcohol addiction. Then parcels arrive containing objects tied to her private life and past. As she searches for the unknown sender, fear and memory begin to blur with reality.
From short film to first feature
Goldman developed Sender from his 2022 short film Return to Sender, which Curtis also produced. The feature was made independently in California, outside the major studios. Rhea Seehorn and David Dastmalchian join Lower and Curtis in the cast.
The film had its world premiere at South by Southwest. It has since won a jury award for best narrative feature at Sidewalk and a best debut feature award at the Chattanooga Film Festival.
The challenge of filming in the Balearics
The festival also held a discussion on filming across the Balearic Islands on Monday at the Estudi General Lul·lià in Palma. Industry representatives praised local crews and their knowledge of the islands, but said island logistics and permits can complicate shoots, particularly on the coast.
They urged filmmakers to plan early and apply for permits in good time. The Baleares Film Commission’s website offers information on locations, permits and other steps needed to prepare a shoot.
