Mallorca Shakespeare project makes 2026 awards final
A Mallorca Shakespeare project is in the running for a 2026 award: drama students in Palma and Britain rehearse together from afar, then work side by side. The Balearic School of Dramatic Art (Esadib) in Palma, Mallorca, said on Monday, 5 October, that its project with Coventry University, Shakespeare Remote, is a finalist for International Collaboration of the Year at the Time Higher Education Awards 2026.
The students use remote rehearsals, known as telepresence, as well as meeting in person. In their mixed teams, the British students work with Catalan while Esadib students work in English. They help one another through the process.
From remote rehearsals to Palma
The partnership began in 2024 with an abridged, bilingual Romeu i Julieta. After two weeks of rehearsing remotely, the Coventry students travelled to Palma for a week of work in Esadib’s courtyard. That production later won a PIEoneer award in 2025.
The next production, Al vostre gust, followed in 2025, with about 40 per cent of its dialogue in Catalan.
This year, the exchange goes both ways
Ten Esadib students and 12 from Coventry University are taking part in this year’s La comedia dels errors. For the first time, the in-person exchange runs in both directions, with performances in Palma and at the British university.
The third year of the project has also included a symposium at Esadib on telepresence and actor training, alongside the presentation of a publication on the subject.
