Mallorca shop language rights: cases to be aired

Responsible for this content: Frank Menze

Mallorca’s shop language rights take centre stage in Pollença on Saturday 24 October: the second ImpliCAT meeting will examine consumer protections and cases of language discrimination. The Municipis de Mallorca Actius pel Català network is holding the event, which will also look at how local councils can promote Catalan.

Pollença mayor Martí March and councillor for language policy Joana Xamena will open the meeting. Clara Tur of Plataforma per la Llengua will then explain the network’s work and why municipal language policy matters. The organisation’s Balearic representative, Maria Garcias, and the Balearic Government’s director general for culture, Llorenç Perelló, will discuss rules on consumers’ language rights and present discrimination cases.

Lluís Segura, an associate lecturer in administrative law at the University of the Balearic Islands, will cover the legal options for protecting language rights in shops. A discussion of local councils’ experiences will close the meeting. Plataforma per la Llengua says it wants elected representatives, council staff and campaigners to share approaches and coordinate their work.
