Brothers in Balearics reach 975-entry story final
A short story by two brothers living in the Balearic Islands is among three finalists chosen from a record 975 entries. Javier and José Bizarro Benítez will learn how their story, ‘Tijeras de coser’, fares on Friday, 9 October, at an awards ceremony in Castelflorite, in Spain’s Huesca province. The Tierra de Monegros short-story competition received entries from 24 countries; the ceremony starts at 19.00 in the municipal hall and is free to attend.
The brothers’ story is up against work by Diana Paola Agámez Pájaro, a Colombian writer living in Italy, and Thais Montolio Bachero from Castellón. The three stories explore memory, violence and family ties in different ways. Judges will announce the first and second prizes, worth 2,500 euros and 1,500 euros, as well as the 1,500-euro award for the best story from the Monegros region.
Before the winners are named, María José Galé Moyano will present her first novel, ‘Arterial’. It follows two people whose lives shift after a bereavement and an unusual discovery.
