Sisyphus without a stone: nine works in Inca
Nine works by Maria Isabel Uribe are on show at Sa Quartera Centre d’Art in Inca. Her exhibition, La montaña de Sísifo no tiene piedra, revisits the Greek myth of Sisyphus and runs until 12 September. Everyday objects provide the starting point for works about the repetitions built into routine and people’s relationship with their surroundings.
Uribe shifts attention away from the familiar myth. In her view, people are not pushing a rock today, but the idea that they can last for ever. Repetition, she argues, is no longer the punishment of one man: it is the pattern of a species that knows its limits but keeps repeating exploitation, violence and destruction.
The exhibition asks what burdens people carry together and what keeps them carrying them. Inca Town Hall says the show examines the habits and behaviour repeated every day, alongside social, ecological and existential questions.
Sa Quartera Centre d’Art is open on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 17.00 to 20.00. On Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, it opens from 10.00 to 13.00 and from 17.00 to 20.00.
