TardOral brings Rafel Ginard’s legacy to Mallorca

Music, theatre, workshops and literary walks will fill the Pla de Mallorca from September to December as TardOral honours Rafel Ginard. The programme marks 50 years since the Mallorcan folklorist and writer died. Antònia Roca, vice-president of the Council of Mallorca, said his work remains a key reference for the island’s songs and traditions.

Ginard’s childhood memoir, De com era infant, is returning to bookshops after being out of print since 2003. A study day in Sant Joan on 28 November will explore his writing and end with a staged reading of the book.

Musicologist Francesc Vicens will also unveil Quan cantava la terra, a study and collection containing scores from Mallorca’s traditional songbook and previously unpublished tunes found in the Council of Mallorca’s Rafel Ginard archive. It will be presented in Palma and then in Sant Joan, where Pau Pasqual and Juanjo Montserrat will perform a selection of its music.

Walks through Ginard’s landscapes

Two routes draw on Ginard’s words. El verger de la paraula crosses natural areas of Aubarca in Parc de Llevant, pairing landscapes from his Croquis artanencs with songs led by Joan Carles Palos and glosadora Joana Aina Ginard Brunet.

El camí de la mort runs from the houses of Son Real to the necropolis. The literary, landscape and archaeological route examines rituals of death and mourning recorded by Ginard in Mallorca’s folkloric calendar.

Concerts, theatre and All Saints’ rituals

Menorcan singer Anna Ferrer premieres Pa in Mallorca on 2 October, a project centred on bread and inheritance. On 6 November, the sanctuary of la Consolació hosts La conversa dels ocells, a concert-recital with Taghi Akhbari, Ensemble Delgoshâ and poet Carles Duarte, based on work by Persian mystic Farid ud-Din Attar.

The programme also includes Terrae’s Vinyes i arrels at Bodega Miquel Oliver in Petra, two performances of immersive theatre piece Mudanzas Portas, and Rodrigo Cuevas’s A pie del llar in Calvià. Aula Folk follows on 13 and 14 November with Amb pandero quadrat, a workshop to build and play a square frame drum.

Around All Saints’ Day, the A Mallorca, Nit de les Ànimes campaign will bring activities on related rituals to libraries and schools. Storytelling sessions will feature La rateta i l’avellaner and Nit de les Ànimes.
