Palma's Teatro Principal prepares to tell its story

Mallorca's Teatro Principal in Palma is preparing to put its own past before the people who visit it. On Thursday, 27 August, the Consell de Mallorca said it had commissioned Lourdes Melis and Aina Ferrero to create a new museum-style presentation across the theatre's public areas. It will also feed into guided tours, an educational booklet and events held in the building.

The project will place the heritage already inside the theatre in context, choose further objects and examine whether pieces and display areas should move. It also calls for detailed documentation of the objects.

Items now kept in the theatre's archives may join the visitor route. Antònia Roca, the Consell de Mallorca's vice-president and councillor for Culture and Heritage, said the theatre would tell its own story and give proper value to heritage that had lacked a museum narrative.

Work begins in September

Planning and creation of the new presentation are due to run from September to October this year. Its installation is scheduled for November and December.

The theatre's management and the Consell's Culture department will work with Melis and Ferrero. The island institution will produce the information elements and handle the movement of objects.

Ferrero has led Inca's Museu del Calçat i de la Indústria since 2017 and teaches at the University of the Balearic Islands. Melis researches Balearic museums and the links between heritage, society and cultural tourism; she has also directed museum projects in Sant Llorenç des Cardassar and Mallorca's railway museum.
