Wild olive forest takes root in Palma exhibition

A forest of wild olive trees arrives at Espai Cor in Palma, Mallorca, on Tuesday. Fabián Schalekamp’s sculpture exhibition, El cor del bosc, runs until 6 December. It rebuilds a woodland from sculptures based on a shared image of a wild olive grove.

Palma’s deputy mayor and culture councillor, Javier Bonet, presented the show on Monday. Curated by Joan Carles Gomis, it forms part of the programme linked to this Saturday’s Nit de l’Art.

Bonet said the recreated grove gives visitors a reason to stop and reflect on the elements of nature. Schalekamp uses the work to ask people to rethink the landscape and natural heritage as things that make life possible.

The artist also calls for the land to be protected from destructive threats named in the exhibition: fires, deforestation and the climate emergency.

Schalekamp began exhibiting in Palma in 1995. His work has since been shown at venues including Can Balaguer, Casal Solleric, Can Marquès and Galería ABA.
