Palma, Mallorca: Work by 50 Spanish women who draw and write comics comes together at the Casal Solleric, spanning 1950 to today. The exhibition, Vinyeta és una paraula femenina, runs until 7 January. Palma’s culture councillor Javier Bonet presented it on Wednesday, 14 October, the city council said.

Part of Mallorca’s Còmic Nostrum international comics festival, the show focuses mainly on drawings but includes the work of comic writers. Three contributors are from Mallorca: Loreto Aroca, Marta Massana and Margalida Vinyes. Vinyes also designed the exhibition poster.

Curator Jaume Vaquer says women who began publishing comics in Spain in the middle of the last century were largely confined to romance and fairy tales. Even their drawing styles were restricted. Yet their work sold: the Azucena series ran to 1,215 issues.

Over time, the stories changed, including explorations of women’s place in a changing society. Some creators worked for adult magazines such as El Jueves; others worked for foreign publishers. Manga attracted a large female audience in the 1990s, alongside a growing number of women working in comics.

The festival also has events planned in Inca, Mallorca, from 14 to 18 October.
