Mallorca in Balearic bid for 2030 gastronomy title
Mallorca’s local food is at the heart of a Balearic bid for the 2030 European Region of Gastronomy title. The Balearic government presented the bid on Thursday, 1 October, hoping to put the islands’ food and drink — and the people who produce it — in the spotlight. The title has not yet been awarded.
The four island councils and 15 organisations from business, academia and the voluntary sector back the bid. The Balearic departments responsible for tourism and agriculture are also involved. The government says it wants the project to help small producers and local firms, while strengthening the links between food, landscapes and traditions. It aims to benefit both islanders and people who visit.
Tourism minister Jaume Bauzá said the bid follows two years of work. Funding from the European Union’s Next Generation EU programme has helped produce a food-and-drink tourism plan for 2025–2035, alongside a website, an app and a catalogue of experiences.
Agriculture minister Joan Simonet said the islands’ food and drink must stay connected to local products, farmers and fishers. For now, the councils and organisations have signed up to the bid; the decision on the 2030 title still lies ahead.
