Mallorca in spring: weather, hiking and Tramuntana culture

Spring is the season of clear light on Mallorca: warm enough for long days outdoors, but still far removed from the summer heat. From March to May, daytime highs rise from 17.6 °C to 22.7 °C, the sun increases noticeably and the island appears fresh, green and open. Anyone who would like to experience Mallorca actively, stylishly and without high-summer bustle will now find one of the best phases of the year.

The almond blossom is already over in spring; it belongs above all in February. Instead, a second, less staged, but very Mallorcan season now begins: olive trees show their silvery play of leaves, dry-stone walls glow in the mild light, and wildflowers add points of colour along paths, fields and mountain terraces.

Temperatures: mild, bright and ideal for active days

In March the weather is still changeable-fresh, but often already pleasant for walks, cycle tours and first hours on terraces. In April spring becomes more stable, in May Mallorca already feels early-summer-like on many days. Daytime maxima move in the core of spring from around 18 to 23 °C. In the mornings and evenings, a light jacket remains sensible, especially in the Serra de Tramuntana and at higher altitudes.

The sea, by contrast, is still cool. The water temperature is 13.9 °C in March, 14.9 °C in April and reaches 17 °C in May. That means: spring is not yet the classic time for extended bathing holidays, but in May there are already the first real bathing days on sunny, low-wind days. Anyone looking for details on the annual course of the sea will find them in the water temperature.

The table shows why spring is so popular: rainfall remains manageable, while sunshine hours increase significantly. In March there are 6.7 hours of sunshine per day, in April 7.3 and in May already 9.4. For classification within the year as a whole, it is worth looking at the climate table and the best time to visit.

Premium hiking season in the Tramuntana

Spring is the premium hiking season on Mallorca. The heat of summer is absent, the air is clear, and the mountains present themselves green and structured. The Serra de Tramuntana in particular is now ideal: dry-stone paths, olive groves, stone terraces and views of the Mediterranean combine to form exactly that landscape for which Mallorca is famous away from the beaches.

The GR-221, the Ruta de Pedra en Sec, is particularly attractive in spring. Stages around Sóller, Deià, Valldemossa and Fornalutx offer a climate that enables long walking times without the temperatures becoming a burden. Hikes at Cap Formentor are also appealing now: the landscape is open, the light intense, and the paths seem significantly more relaxed than in the high season.

It remains important to keep an eye on wind and weather conditions. In the Tramuntana, the perceived temperature can change noticeably because of wind. For mountain tours and exposed coastal paths, the Tramuntana wind is a relevant factor.

Places with style: Sóller, Valldemossa, Deià and Fornalutx

Spring brings the premium places of the Tramuntana into their most pleasant balance. In Sóller, orange groves, historical architecture and a mountain backdrop combine with mild weather. Valldemossa seems especially atmospheric in the spring light, ideal for culture, short hikes and quiet afternoons. Deià shows its artistic, elegant side, while Fornalutx, with natural stone, terraces and views into the valley, counts among the island’s most classic spring addresses.

Pollença also fits perfectly into this season. The place is a strong starting point for hikes in the north and at the same time an art hotspot with galleries, historical lanes and an atmosphere that seems more concentrated in spring than in summer. From here, tours towards the Tramuntana and Formentor are especially obvious.

March, April or May: which spring month fits?

March is ideal for travellers seeking peace, green landscape and clear air. The days are already longer, but the evenings remain fresh. April is the classic active month: mild, bright and very suitable for hiking, culture and country hotels. In May, the feeling shifts towards early summer. The sun is significantly more present, the sea reaches 17 °C, and the first bathing days become realistic.

Anyone planning Mallorca in spring should pack their suitcase flexibly: light clothing for sunny middays, a warmer layer for morning and evening as well as good shoes for natural-stone paths and coastal paths. In this way, the island can be experienced in exactly the form that many connoisseurs prefer: active, cultivated, green and pleasantly temperate.
