Fornalutx – The Most Beautiful Village in Spain

Fornalutx – The Most Beautiful Village in Spain

Fornalutx lies just a few kilometers above Sóller in the Serra de Tramuntana and has been awarded several times as "Spain's most beautiful village". With only about 700 inhabitants, this small place has preserved its authentic character. The narrow, cobbled alleys, traditional stone houses with their green shutters and terraced orange groves create an atmosphere that transports visitors back in time.

The village sits at 150 meters altitude on the slopes of Puig Major, Mallorca's highest mountain. The spectacular location offers breathtaking views over the Sóller valley to the sea. Fornalutx is a perfect example of traditional Mallorcan mountain architecture and is protected as a heritage site.

History and Tradition

The history of Fornalutx dates back to Moorish times, as evidenced by the terraced cultivation areas and sophisticated irrigation system that still exist today. The name derives from the Arabic "Fornalig". After the Christian conquest in the 13th century, the village developed into an important center for orange cultivation.

The traditional architecture with characteristic "tejas" (red roof tiles) and artistically decorated eaves has been uniquely preserved. Many houses date from the 16th and 17th centuries and have been lovingly restored without losing their original character.
