Sineu Weekly Market – shopping attraction in the interior of the island

The small town of Sineu is located in the interior of Mallorca and has just under 3,000 inhabitants. Every Wednesday, the dreamy little town awakens from its slumber for the weekly market where hundreds of tourists from all over the island flock to the market square.

The traditional weekly market of Sineu is an attraction in the interior of Mallorca and is a great attraction for locals and tourists alike. Farmers from the fertile Mallorcan lowlands and the "Valley of Gold" in the Tramuntana mountains serve up regional produce at their stalls.

The displays are lined with melons, tomatoes, aubergines, peppers and citrus fruits while onion and garlic braids hang down from the roof of the stands. The vegetables on the market are offered at moderate prices and goats, sheep and poultry are also for sale at the heart of the market.

In a separate section of the market, retailers offer T-shirts, hand-painted ceramics and home textiles. Souvenir sellers pitch a range of goods both of the local craft and mass produced Asian variety.

A visit to the Mallorcan town is also worthwhile on non- market days. The central marketplace is quiet and tranquil in the sun where a few elderly people sit on benches under shady trees.

Just a few steps from the market square is the church of Sant Marc dating from the early 16th century with its free-standing Campanile. In front of the church is the bronze statue of a winged lion and a collection of small winding streets run through the old town of Sineu.

Several welcoming cellar restaurants and pavement cafes are dotted throughout the old town. In addition to the parish church there is a small museum where, among other things, ceramic objects from the time of Moorish rule are available. The nunnery in the centre of the town, which once served as the temporary residence of King Jaume II during the late middle ages can only be visited from the outside.
